New innovative parking technology is launching at Edinburgh Airport, aiming to revolutionise valet parking while using space more efficiently.
The airport has invested £12 million into a new vehicle space which will be built on the current surface car park, while adding an additional 5,000 parking spaces by 2021. Construction will begin in summer 2019 with an aim to make it as straightforward and the least disruptive for customers as possible.
Features of the new facilities will include:
1. Passengers would drive their vehicle through new dedicated parking entrance where HD cameras will take a 360º image scan of the vehicle.
Cars will then proceed to drive in and park in one of the spacious ferry lanes. Passengers will subsequently exit their vehicles, then have a short walk to purpose-built reception area
2. Once at the kiosks, passengers will need to scan their digital ticket via the app, email or through typing in the booking reference. After that, the car is checked in and keys are tagged before dropping them through a secure chute
Passengers have then completed the simple check-in process and can leave ahead of their trip away.
3. On return, passengers must scan their QR code in order to retrieve their key from a specific locker and await on further instructions on where their vehicle is parked.
Alec Hodgson, Head of Digital and Parking at Edinburgh Airport, said: “We’ve looked at our current parking options and identified an innovative facility which will revolutionise parking at Scotland’s busiest airport. By using the latest technology and adapting to the digital age we are in, we are offering a self-service product which is more convenient for our passengers.
“This is the first approach of its kind in Scotland and again we are proud to be leading the industry by embracing technology and planning for the future. We will deliver 5,000 new spaces by 2021 and enhance availability and affordability of parking at Edinburgh Airport by using our space more efficiently.
“We know passengers want a smooth and effective start to their holidays or business trips and we’re striving to offer that, starting with that vehicle drop off. The positive passenger experience is crucial to our business and something that will always be at the heart of our approach.”
